Accidents can happen anytime, even if you drive carefully. Whether it’s a small knock or a serious crash, here’s what to do step by step, the proper Singapore way.
1. Stop the Vehicle Immediately

Don’t drive off. It’s an offence to leave the scene.

If the car can move, park at the side safely and turn on your hazard lights.
2. Check for Injuries

Check yourself, your passengers, and others involved.

If anyone is injured, call 995 for an ambulance right away.
3. Call the Police (If Needed)
Must call the police if:

Got injuries or death
-
Involves foreign vehicle, cyclist, pedestrian, or government property
-
The other party refuses to cooperate or gives you attitude
Police Hotline: 999
4. Exchange Details
With all drivers involved, exchange:

Name and NRIC/FIN
-
Contact number
-
Vehicle plate number
-
Driving licence details
-
Insurance company
Don’t forget to note down the make and colour of the car.
5. Take Photos of Everything
Use your phone to snap:

Damage to both vehicles (close-up and wide shots)
-
Scene of accident (junction, lane markings, traffic lights, etc.)

Number plates
-
Driver’s face (just in case)
Also record the Date, time, location, and what happened. This helps protect you later.
6. Don’t Admit Fault
Even if you think it’s your fault, don’t say sorry or admit anything on the spot. Just keep calm and explain what happened. Let insurance or Traffic Police investigate.
7. Report to Your Insurer (Within 24 Hours)
No matter how minor the accident is, you must report to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day.
If not, you may:

Lose your No Claim Discount (NCD)

Have your future claims rejected

Risk your policy being terminated
8. Follow Up on Claims
